How to Use a Fuse Tap
Any of our lit products — LED badges, side markers, an LED steering wheel display — needs a power source. A fuse tap is the tidy way to get one without cutting into your car's wiring.
What it is
A fuse tap is a small adapter that sits in a fuse slot. Your original fuse goes into one position, your new accessory fuse into the other. You get a powered feed for your accessory, both circuits stay individually fused, and nothing in the factory harness is cut.
The alternative — a T-tap that pierces a wire's insulation — works, but it creates a permanent break in the weatherproofing and a corrosion point. A fuse tap is cleaner and fully reversible.
Switched vs constant: the decision that matters
Fuse slots come in two kinds.
- Constant — live all the time, even with the key out
- Switched — live only with the ignition on
For accessory lighting you almost always want switched. Wire lights to a constant circuit and they can stay powered with the car parked, which drains the battery. People discover this on the third morning.
Step 1: Find and test a candidate
Do not trust the fuse box diagram alone. Test it.
With a test light or multimeter, back-probe the fuse and check three states:
- Key off — should read nothing
- Ignition on — should read roughly 12V
- Key off again — should drop back to nothing
If it has power with the key out, it is a constant circuit. Pick another one.
Step 2: Avoid anything that matters
Never tap a circuit tied to safety or driveline systems. Stay away from airbag and SRS, ABS and brakes, engine and transmission control, and anything with a warning symbol beside it.
Good candidates are usually low-draw accessory circuits — the sort of thing that runs a mirror, a cigarette lighter socket or an interior convenience feature. Names vary hugely between vehicles, which is exactly why you test rather than assume.
Step 3: Match the fuse type
Fuses come in several physical sizes and a tap only fits its own type. The common ones are standard ATO/ATC, the smaller Mini, the Low-Profile Mini often found in newer vehicles, and Micro2.
Pull the fuse you plan to tap and take it to the parts store with you. Buying the wrong size is the most common wasted trip on this job.
Step 4: Crimp the wire properly
If your accessory came with a connector you are not using, cut it off and strip about 6mm of insulation.
Insert the wire into the tap's crimp barrel and crimp with a proper crimping tool — not pliers. Then pull on it firmly. If it moves at all, redo it. A crimp that fails later behind the dash is genuinely irritating to find.
Step 5: Fit it the right way round
This step gets done backwards constantly.
- Pull the original fuse and note its rating
- Put that original fuse into the tap position closest to the tap's own body — this is the slot that feeds the vehicle's original circuit
- Put a new fuse for your accessory in the other slot, rated for your accessory, not the car's
- Push the tap into the fuse slot fully seated
Fitted the wrong way round, the tap can put your accessory's load through the original circuit's protection. Both circuits are supposed to be independently fused. If your accessory does not power up but the original circuit works, the tap is in backwards.
Step 6: Ground it, then test
Your accessory also needs a ground. Use an existing chassis ground point — bare metal bolted to the body. Paint is not a ground. Scrape it back if you need to.
Then run the same test as before: on with the ignition, off with the key out. If it stays lit with the car off, you are on a constant circuit — go back to step 1.
Routing
Keep wiring away from anything hot, anything sharp, and anything that moves. Behind trim panels is fine. Draped across a steering column is not. Secure it with tape or clips so it cannot drop into the pedals.
